Theories that broadband companies throttle IPTV traffic are many. In 2024 we asked several large operators. Here is a summary of what they stated then.
The information is from 2024 and is based on the operators’ own answers to us. We have not been able to measure anything ourselves.
What the operators stated
- Bahnhof: stated that the company does not throttle traffic, that net neutrality is part of how it operates, and that it neither examines nor monitors customers’ use.
- Telia: stated that it does not throttle bandwidth for its customers.
- Telenor: stated that it upholds net neutrality and does not block or limit access unless the law requires it.
- Bredbandsbolaget: stated that it has no insight into customers’ content and does not throttle based on specific activities.
So what causes the buffering?
According to our technical expert, it is common to blame someone else, but congestion, a weak Wi-Fi signal and the device’s capacity are far more common causes. A VPN can give a temporary improvement by changing the route of the traffic, which easily leads to the conclusion that the operator is the problem when it is not necessarily so.
The best tip
Connect a network cable directly from the router to the TV or player. That eliminates most Wi-Fi problems. Continue with our troubleshooting guide.
