Buffering is the most common complaint. The cause is more often in your home network than with the provider. Here is how to find where the problem sits.
Step 1: Work out where the fault is
Try another service on the same device, for example a high-quality video on a large streaming service. If that stutters too, the fault is in your connection or device. If it works well, the problem is more likely with the service you are testing.
Step 2: Use a cable
A network cable between the router and the TV or player is the single most effective measure. Wi-Fi is affected by walls, neighbours’ networks and other devices. A cable gives a steadier response time.
Step 3: Improve Wi-Fi if a cable is not possible
- Use the 5 GHz band instead of 2.4 GHz
- Place the router in the open and close to the TV
- Consider a mesh system or a powerline adapter if the distance is large
Step 4: Calculate the bandwidth
As a rule of thumb, an HD stream needs about 8–10 Mbit/s and a 4K stream 20–25 Mbit/s. Multiply by the number of people watching at the same time and add a margin for other use. Measure with a speed test while other devices are running, not just when everything is quiet.
Step 5: Restart and update
Restart the router and the playback device. Update the app and the device’s software. Old media players and cheap TV sticks often have too weak a processor for 4K.
Step 6: Adjust the app settings
- Enable hardware decoding if the app offers it
- Increase the buffer size if there is an option
- Choose a lower resolution for live broadcasts with a high bitrate
Step 7: Check the time of day
If the problem only occurs in the evening or during big matches, it may be congestion, either in your area or at the service. Note the time and date so you can compare patterns.
Step 8: Be careful about blaming your internet provider
A VPN can sometimes give a temporary improvement because the traffic takes a different route, but that does not prove your provider is throttling. Read what the operators themselves say in Do broadband providers throttle IPTV?
Quick table
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Stutters only on Wi-Fi | Weak or disturbed signal | Cable or 5 GHz |
| Stutters in the evening | Congestion | Note the pattern, try another time |
| Stutters only in 4K | Bandwidth or weak device | Lower the resolution, change device |
| Stutters everywhere | Your connection | Contact your internet provider |
| Stutters only with one service | The service’s servers | Contact support |
